"For me, I find tutoring so worthwhile because the results are real and visible. A student who struggles in a certain subject area, or cannot quite grasp a concept, not only sees their success in their test result, but is also able to use that knowledge for the rest of their life. Throughout high school and now in University I have found that helping and working with others is the most effective way to learn. English class allows students to express their own ideas in their own way, and I am often surprised by the unique insight each student brings to the discussion."

Writing is perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences I derived during my years as a Melbourne University undergraduate. Clear, concise and perceptive linguistic expression were of the utmost necessity to the academic challenges that Law and Arts presented. I tutor English to share these – effectively – life skills. I am interested in guiding students in the direction of progress, witnessing their refined use of language as they begin to write with creative flourish.”

JOEL JAYA

As a student of Melbourne High School I was encouraged to undertake a wide variety of different subjects spanning the arts, humanities, mathematics and science; however I quickly came to realise that I had a passion for science, in particular biology and chemistry. It was this interest that led me to pursue a career in medicine.

Throughout my VCE years I often found time to assist my peers in understanding some of the concepts involved. Although it was sometimes a challenge, the satisfaction of getting through to my peers and later to my students is something I really enjoy doing and it is this that drives me towards finding more efficient and effective ways of teaching the subject matter to ensure my students have a sound understanding of the course before they tackle their all important end of year exams

"I have always enjoyed problem solving and understanding how things work, which forms the basis of my passion for maths and science. These subjects have always been my strengths in school, as I enjoyed learning and understanding the logic and reasoning behind why we do what we do to solve problems. In school, this lead to many of my peers approaching me for help, and in successfully helping them understand how to answer a question, I would always get this joyful and satisfying feeling, which is one of the things that makes me enjoy tutoring.

Apart from maths and science, my passion for problem solving has also led me to enjoy things like strategy games such as chess, which is something I often do when in my spare time.

CHLOE LILKENDEY

Chloe is currently undertaking a Bachelors of Science degree at Monash University. During her studies at High School Chloe received the following awards:

- Highest Academic Result Awards (Top of the Class) in: I.T. Applications, Further Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics

I have always enjoyed and understood mathematics, it is just one of those talents that snuck up on me. I found I would often be correcting the teacher’s mistakes or asking for more challenging problems. Throughout high school I improved my knowledge and skills by teaching and helping my peers when they were having trouble. Being able to clearly explain a mathematical concept is a true test of knowledge and is also a much more enjoyable way of studying.

- 2010: Member of the Monash University Golden Key International Honour Society
- 2010: Dean of Arts/Education Recognition Award for excellence in academic results

Throughout my secondary education my favourite subjects have been English and Literature, and once I recognised that I could further my studies in these areas at university, I began to entertain the idea that I could practice what I love on a professional level. I have recently completed my BA in the areas of Comparative literature and English, and am about to commence Honours in the year ahead, taking my passion for literature to a higher and more intensive plateau. I have been tutoring English and Literature for the past three years, and have enjoyed sharing the ideas and concepts found within these subjects with students of all ages. English is not just the study of language, but of life itself, and one of the reasons I love teaching it is because it builds on the maturity and understanding of the world that is integral in later adult life. Seeing students grow in their understanding of key ideas and ability to express complex issues is one of the most rewarding experiences a tutor can ask for.”

- Received a Scholarship from the University of Melbourne.

“Throughout my years in High School, I’ve learnt that the foundation of success is partially to have older colleagues to guide you, which I hope to do, and partially to not only be able to complete questions but to understand the theories and concepts which problems stem from. The ability to apply broad theories and concepts are essential not only in the success of VCE but also towards future academic endeavours. As such, I aim to not only to teach techniques and tricks that help students achieve their VCE goals but also a sense of independence. There is an overwhelming sense of pride when a student grasps a concept and is able to tackle any problem. It’s a fantastic feeling to help a student realize their full potential and help their thirst to quench this.

LUKE LYNCH

"Never before has information been so readily available, to so many people, instantaneously and across the entire globe. The ubiquity of the Internet, and of advertising, means that the ongoing development and exercise of our critical thinking abilities is an urgent concern, for all of us. Where people are, language is, and where language is, there is also the market where ideas, ideologies and perspectives are bought into. Being able to analyse the language of this market, being able to resist it, and to speak and act for one’s self, is, for me, one of the most valuable aspects of competence in English."

UDITHA KARIYAWASAM
Chemistry & Biology Tutor

Uditha is currently undertaking the prestigious Doctor of Medicine postgraduate course at The University of Melbourne.

“As a tutor, the most rewarding thing is to help students build a passion for what they are learning. I also encourage my students to try and strive for their maximum potential. From experience I know that academic success is not limited to how smart someone is, good study technique and hard work can make a massive difference.

As a student, I loved science for as long as I can remember. I always had a curiosity for how things work and wanted to know the science behind everyday objects and events. My passion for science is what drove me towards pursuing medicine as a career."

JONATHAN SISE
Senior English Tutor

Jonathan graduated from Haileybury College achieving an ENTER score of 99.10. Jonathan continued his education at The University of Melbourne completing a double degree in Commerce/Law.

“I tutor English for three reasons: (1) I think that it can improve students' grasp and execution of senior English tasks (2) I am quite fond of the analysis, elaboration, and setting out which is the essence of the subject (3) I rather like the cut and thrust of teaching."
